Discourse Community Response
As always writing is an essential technique to our societies because it is the form in which we communicate whether it be on a piece of paper or electronically via e-mail. In writing you can communicate feelings, emotions, and ideas. When we write we mostly do it for educational or formal purposes where we have a goal in mind. You must reach out to your audience through the use of rhetoric to attract and maintain their attention. The manner in which we convey information will decide the effectiveness in writing to many ambiguous discourse communities.
An audience may expand and overlap through many of the communities as long as they fit the detailed specifications. The academic discourse community of the University of Texas at El Paso would probably the most difficult to achieve because there are many requirements and conditions. To join the community of UTEP you must have a high school diploma, taken placement exams and apply for admission. Gaining admission into an institution is a prestige accomplishment and is a great community to be a part of. The conventions for a school community would be formal and professional behavior. For example when speaking to an instructor you would say, “Professor, can you please help me with the homework?” appose to, “hey I need help with this.” You also need proper grammar and must always cite sources. The genres used in a school community would be: reports, essays, personal narratives, memos, and notes. All should be written in a formal outline unless specified or if it is for a friend. In school the topic covered is based on the course subject or the teacher’s background experience. If you take the same class or topic as another student then you are in the same community within the community. You will use special terminology related to your course subject. For example you can use symbols for math and key vocabulary for sciences.
To join the working community you must apply to a location that is hiring, then be interviewed and complete the orientation. Work related genres would correspond to tasks, orders, and responsibilities made clear to you by management or a leader. In the work environment the community is very wide because no matter what the job if you are employed you are part of the working community. The topics that were related to our group were selling electronic cigarettes, AVON, working in retail, organizing and folding clothes, and customer service. When working the only specialized language you might use will be certain references pertaining to your field of work.
Sports are great for interaction and recreation but are tiring and require much dedication. Joining the sports community you must first take interest into a sport, then try out and be chosen for the team. If you are joining for personal interaction and activity then to join you must have interest in a sport of any kind.
